As a student nurse at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in the 1980s, I was surprised to see consultant surgeons sitting in the tea-room while junior doctors undertook operations. I once queried this behaviour and was told it was a “teaching hospital”. Surely teaching junior doctors surgical skills required consultant surgeons to be in the operating room.
